World's Largest Spice Company To Go Organic and Non-GMO by 2016

I generally like to know what is in my foods, so that I know what I’m putting into my body. I like to keep it clean and simple, which is why I was so excited when I learned that McCormick & Co., the World’s Largest Spice Company To Go Organic and Non-GMO by 2016!

Organic foods refers to foods that are produced by organic farming which promotes ecological balance, fosters cycling of resources and promotes the conservation of biodiversity. Synthetic pesticides and chemical fertilizers are not used in organic farming and organic foods are also not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or other synthetic food additives. While there is currently “insufficient evidence” in medical literature to support claims that organic foods are safer or healthier than their conventional counterparts, for me it stands to reason that not putting food which has been sprayed with pesticides into my body has to be safer and healthier in the long run.

The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organization which was founded in 2008 to preserve and build sources of non-GMO products and to educate consumers and provide verified non-GMO choices. On their website they provide an article entitled “GMO Myths and Truths” which is described as “an evidence-based examination of the claims made for the safety and efficacy of genetically modified crops” (despite broad scientific consensus that food derived from GM crops poses no greater risk to human health than conventional food).

McCormick & Company, a Fortune 1000 company that manufactures spices, herbs and other flavorings, began in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1889. The company was started by Willoughby McCormick when he was just 25 years old and selling products from one room and a cellar. Initial products included root beer, flavoring extracts, fruit syrups and juices but McCormick’s spread into spices seven years later with the acquisition of the F. G. Emmett Spice Company. McCormick’s has since acquired many food manufacturing companies, worldwide and with 8,000 employees, they are the largest spice company. I often purchase McCormick & Co. spices, so I was delighted to learn that they are going organic and non-GMO with a huge majority of their products. This is a true victory for the “clean food movement”.

Due to the organic and non-GMO food boom, companies such as Simply Organic have been able to grow. Although McCormick has maintained its spot as the world’s largest spice company, they are making the move in order to keep other companies (such as Simply Organic) from stealing their market share. In total, approximately 80% of their products will be non-GMO by 2016 (and will carry the new label). According to one source, many of McCormick’s spices and herbs are already non-GMO but the announcement and new labeling will help increase the transparency. Now, cooking with some of our most-loved spices will be the healthier option, and I couldn’t be happier about it.
