This simply homemade goulash recipe was adapted from Paula Deans 'Bobby's Goulash', into a delicious dish made and photographed by Natural Homemade Living. The basic goulash recipe dates back several hundred years and when you really start digging it is hard to find the meaning of 'authentic' when it comes to goulash. It never fails when you post a goulash recipe on your food blog to quickly hear comments that it is not a goulash,'that's not how goulash is made' and so on.

A famous Hungarian cookbook sitting on my book shelf states that there are as many authentic goulash recipes as there are cooks. If you really do your searching around the web and in cookbooks you will certainly find that there are no two goulash recipes that are exactly the same. However, there are some things that most goulash recipes will have in common.

In general, a goulash will have beef, onions, and paprika. Some goulash recipes will also have tomatoes, while others never add them. Some goulash recipes add wine and some use beef stock. One family rule that we found on the internet by a fellow blogger was that you should have the same amount of onions as you do beef. For example one pound of beef, you use one pound of onions.

In the goulash recipe the chef uses macaroni to make it an even fuller dish, but this is not an ingredient that all chefs use for their goulash recipes. Whether you like to admit it or not, there is no real authentic goulash recipe that everything stems back to, but instead thousands of authentic recipes from families sharing in this delicious and filling meal together across the world.

For this goulash recipe the ingredients you will need include ground turkey, ground beef, diced onion, tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with juice, water and garlic. You will also need Italian seasoning, bay leaves, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and elbow macaroni.

To start brown the meat and the onions in a large frying pan. A cast iron Dutch oven works well. After the meat is brown, you can spoon off the excess grease. Then add the tomato sauce, tomatoes, water, garlic, Italian seasoning, bay leaves, worcestershire sauce, seasoning salt, and pepper. Then stir everything together, and put the lid onto your pan and cook for approximately 25 minutes. Then add the macaroni and simmer for another 20 to 25 minutes over low heat. Then let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes with the heat off. Be sure to remove the bay leave before serving.
